This project was inspired by some of my favourite places in Norfolk. Tiny hamlets that have only half a dozen houses in some cases.
One thing all of these hamlets do have though is a church and a loyal congregation often of only 5 or 6 people. While photographing this project I spoke to some of the people who maintain the churches and help out. Most were in their late sixties, one of whom was an atheist. I think this shows what a significant and central part the church can play in village life irrespective of whether one believes in God. It also shows that most churches rely on an increasingly aging population to keep them going. What will happen to the hundreds of Norfolk churches, in an increasingly secular society, as the present congregation passes on?
